Sierra Club Meeting on Rural Electric Cooperatives
The Energy Committee of the Iowa Chapter of the Sierra Club will be hosting a meeting on May 19 at 12:30 at the East Side Library in Des Moines, 2559 Hubbell Ave.to discuss issues, barriers, and what is possible under the current regulatory framework to bring the rural electric cooperatives into supporting distributed generation and energy efficiency. The meeting will involve developing a vision and strategies to implement clean and renewable energy and energy efficiency for cooperative customers because the coops have been slow and/or resistant in addressing these issues.
The Iowa Chapter was given a small grant to assist us in our work. We will be, among other things, developing a packet of brochures and informational flyers. We have been given funds to table at 3 events later this year.
The focus of this project is to get volunteers to assist in this effort. To that end, we have identified several areas where we need specific skills:
- writers -- individuals with skills to research material and develop fact sheets
- photographers - individuals who can take pictures that can be used in the fact sheets and on the display board
- volunteers to table - individuals who are willing to table, to talk to the public, and to answer questions
If you want to learn or to participate, please join us. If you will not be able to attend, but still want to participate, please let us know.

Iowan to Receive National Sierra Club Award
The Iowa Chapter just received notification that Jane Clark, Iowa's current chapter chair, has been selected to receive the Sierra Club’s 2011 Special Service Award. This national award honors a Sierra Club member for strong and consistent commitment to conservation or the Club over an extended period of time. Jane has been invited to be presented this award at a celebration to be held in San Francisco in September.
Congratulations to Jane for this well-deserved honor! We have many talented and dedicated people in our Chapter and hopefully she will be the first of several deserving Iowa Sierrans to be recognized.
