MARCH TO RE-ENERGIZE IOWA

The Sierra Student Coalition spent the summer organizing the March to Re-Energize Iowa that began in Ames August 2.  The march culminated with a stop at Birdland Park in Des Moines on August 5 followed by a rally at Nollen Plaza in downtown Des Moines.  

James Hansen, a NASA climate expert and native Iowan, served as the keynote speaker.  You can read his address  here...

About 80 global warming activists gathered at Birdland Park on August 5 for lunch before completing the last leg of the March to Re-Energize Iowa

Des Moines Mayor Frank Cownie served as master of ceremonies at the March to Re-Energize Iowa rally held at Nollen Plaza in downtown Des Moines.

 

Approximately 250 people attended the rally and heard Rev. David Wood, First Presbyterian Church of Waterloo (lower left), address the crowd.

 

Cathy Duvall, Sierra Club's National Political Director based in Washington, D.C., told the crowd at Nollen Plaza that the U.S. House of Representatives passed its energy bill the day before the rally.  Joe Richie, SSC Regional Campus Director (seated on the right), and Juliana Williams, one of the SSC organizers, listened to the speakers' comments from the Nollen Plaza stage.

 

David Foster, Executive Director of the Blue Green Alliance from Minneapolis, addressed the crowd of approximately 250.

 

Dr. James Hansen, Director of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies and a leading authority on global warming, served as keynote speaker at the rally.  You can read Dr. Hansen's address here...
